I am beyond thrilled to announce that my new book, How To Train Your Dog With Love + Science, is now available for purchase!

This book has been so long in the making. I conceived of it in 2010, shortly after I graduated the Karen Pryor Academy, which is where I learned how to be a pro dog trainer. Since then… a LOT has happened!

I…

-Got divorced (it was amicable)
-Converted my living room into a dog training center
-Opened up a store front training center in the East Village (and then another and another)
-Lost my apartment in a house fire
-Got remarried (also amicable 😂)
-Lost my dad
-Had a miscarriage
-Had a daughter
-Had another daughter
-Lost my dog
-Lost my cat
-Got a different dog
-Got a different cat
-Survived a global pandemic
-Got my business through a global pandemic
-Started a podcast
-Started an online store
-Started a professional course
-Trained A LOT of dogs!

Man, I’ve done a lot of living!

I tried to sell the proposal for this book twice before I finally got some coaching on how to package it from a client-turned-friend, Stephanie Higgs. I feel like she was a fairy god mother who swooped down and helped finally make this dream come true.

I wrote the book mostly during three intense months in late 2022, although, in some ways, I’d been writing it in my head all along.

I actually wrote enough to fill TWO books in that time, but Stephanie helped me whittle it down to its essence. It’s being put out by Sourcebooks, an Illinois independent publisher. They’ve been wonderful to work with.

My goal with the book was to take the subject of dog training — something people don’t traditionally think of as a real good time — and present it in a way that is engaging and practical, especially for city dog owners. It is through dog training that I discovered that there is a science of behavior (who knew!) and I hope this book conveys my passion for using dog training as a lens to explore the science of behavior across all species, including humans.

I hope you will check it out!

Right now, if you upload a copy of your receipt, I will send you a clicker and a sticker as a thank you!

If you’d like to get a sneak peek at what’s inside, you can find an excerpt published by Fast Company. I was also lucky enough to be interviewed earlier this month for Psychology Today by Dr. Marc Bekoff, and by Alison Stewart for All Of It on NPR.
